Regals Emerge Victorious in Record-Breaking Performance Behind Hesse’s Historic Rounds

VENTURA, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's golf placed first in the CA State Intercollegiate, the team's first tournament of the 2025-26 year. The Regals hosted the tournament at par-72 Olivas Links, finishing at +13 after two rounds in two days. Kaylie Hesse, Maya Dela Rama, and Anna Poulin each placed in the top-10 to kick off their fall seasons.

Sharing the course with the men's tournament, the Regals brought out 11 golfers and began at 8am Monday morning with a shotgun start. Hesse (H3) got off to a nice start, birdying par-3 hole 5 after pars on her opening two holes. She collected another birdie on hole 10 while knocking in 15 total pars to finish at -1.

Poulin (H5) began her 2025 fall season with a bogey on the par-3, but she quickly settled in with two birdies and 15 pars the rest of the way to join Hesse at -1. Caroline Morris (H4) had a great stretch with four birdies in eight holes, beginning with the par-4 hole 12, and she finished at +1.

Dela Rama (H4) came out firing with two birdies in her first two holes, adding one more on the par-5 hole 14, eventually ending at +3. Brooke Alderson (H6) notched four birdies on the day, including consecutive ones on the par-4 holes 11 and 12, and rode those to a +5 finish.

The Regals' additional golfers competed as individuals, with Julia Booth (H18) and Tori Ruiz (H16) each putting together a round of +8. Booth secured a birdie on the par-4 hole 6 and Ruiz collected one on the par-3 hole 13. Ruiz amazingly dropped in an eagle on the par-4 hole 7, the only eagle of the tournament for the Regals. Lily Stern (H17) knocked in back-to-back birdies on holes 1 and 2, contributing to a +12 round.

Cal Lutheran found itself with a healthy lead after the opening round, as the team shot +2 and sat nine strokes ahead of the nearest opponent. The Regals set a new mark for lowest team round in program history (290), finishing three strokes ahead of the previous record.Hesse and Poulin both held a share of the lead in a three-way tie at -1 and tied for 5th-lowest individual round in Regals history, a list that both golfers are already on.

The Regals were back at it early the next morning, with another shotgun start at 8am. Dela Rama (H5) led the way with three birdies and 12 pars en route to an even round. Aside from a shaky four-hole stretch at the start of the back-nine, she handled the course with ease. Hesse (H3) overcame an early hiccup, a triple-bogey on hole 4, to finish at +2 behind two birdies, including an immediate bounceback on hole 5.

Alderson (H6) played steady golf with 13 pars and one birdie on hole 15 to notch a round of +4. Poulin (H4) sank a birdie on the par-13 hole 17 and finished at +5. Morris (H4) collected 11 pars in a +9 round.

As individuals, Booth (16) and first-year Rylee Savarino (H18) played well, as Booth rode three birdies and Savarino managed 13 pars as both finished at +7. Samp (H18) knocked in a birdie on hole 15 and ended at +8. Stern (H17) dropped in a birdie on hole 5 and finished at +9.

Cal Lutheran was able to fend off a feisty UC Santa Cruz group, ending three strokes ahead of the Banana Slugs, +13 to +16. The Regals came away with a victory in their first tournament of 2025-26.

Hesse took sole possession of second place with a 36-hole score of +1. Dela Rama, tied for 5th at +3, and Poulin, tied for 7th at +4, gave Cal Lutheran three top-10 finishes.

Alderson and Morris managed top-20 finishes at +9 and +10, respectively.

Hesse tied the program record for 36-hole individual score at 145, joining Ashley Zook and Jett Lagacion atop the all-time list.

Dela Rama and Poulin also cracked the 36-hole top-10 program record list for their performances, and Poulin became the all-time leader in number of rounds par or under (5).

With all the individual accolades listed above, it's no surprise that Cal Lutheran set a new program record for 36-hole team score (589), beating last year's CA State Intercollegiate score by 10 strokes.

The Regals will look to continue their scorching hot start at the Menlo Invitational in Carmel, CA on September 29 and 30, first tees at 8am.
