COSTA MESA, Calif. – Cal Lutheran men's golf wrapped up the SCIAC Championships on Tuesday afternoon at the par-72 Los Lagos course at Costa Mesa Country Club. Led by
Adam Cartozian's superb finish, the Kingsmen took sole possession of fourth place with a team score of -16 through 154 holes. Cartozian shot the lowest round by any member of the Kingsmen this year with a 67, placing him in the top-5 through the 54-hole tournament.
Coming off the third-lowest team round in program history (280) the day prior, Cal Lutheran sat in third place entering the final round.
Cartozian began the round in complete control, knocking in pars on 11 of the first 12 holes while birdying the par-4 hole 8. Then he unlocked another gear. He birdied five of the last six holes to shoot a 31 on the back-nine, giving him a 67 on the day as Cartozian recaptured some of the magic from two years prior when he shot a 67 at the 2023 SCIAC Championships. His -5 round was tied for the third-lowest score on Tuesday.
Cartozian finished at -8 after shooting 208 over the three rounds, tying for the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history, two strokes behind his own record. He tied for fifth place individually.
Hudson Solters had quite the day himself, kicking off the round with two birdies on the first two holes before sneaking in another couple birdies to end the front-nine. A birdie to end the round on the par-5 hole 18 landed him at -2 on the day and -5 on the tournament, tying Solters for 11th overall. His 54-hole score of 211, one stroke behind his personal best, is tied for the fifth-lowest such score in program history.
Blake Fitzhugh collected pars on 12 of the first 13 holes before birdies on holes 14 and 18. A +1 final round tied him for 14th individually after the tournament concluded. Fitzhugh put forth a 54-hole score of 213, a personal career best and tied for the 10th-lowest score in program history.
Rounding out the scorecard for Cal Lutheran on Tuesday was
Ty Kuroda, who dropped in four birdies, including one on hole 18 (the fourth Kingsmen golfer to do so on the day) en route to a +1 round and a +3 overall finish.
Tanner Stewart managed a birdie on the par-4 hole 10 and finished with a +3 day and a +2 tournament.
Cal Lutheran set a new school record for lowest team score in a 54-hole tournament with 848 as each of the five Kingsmen contributed to that historic total.
Despite the record-setting performance by Cal Lutheran, the SCIAC competition was at its best in Costa Mesa this week, with CMS finishing at -34, Redlands coming in second at -27, and Pomona-Pitzer ending not far behind at -26.
The Kingsmen will await their fate as the at-large bids for the NCAA Championships will be announced on Monday.
Adam Cartozian may have a shot at competing individually, also to be announced in the near future.
