LONGVIEW, Texas – The Cal Lutheran men's golf team delivered a championship performance this week, capturing the team title at the FST Crossing Creeks Invitational while
Tate Evans led the field individually at the three-round tournament held Monday and Tuesday in Longview, Texas.
The Kingsmen finished atop the team standings behind a balanced lineup and a dominant showing from Evans, who fired rounds of 68, 66 and 69 to finish 7-under-par for the tournament and secure first place. The victory was highlighted by Cal Lutheran finishing ahead of tournament host and No. 23-ranked LeTourneau University.
Evans set the tone early with a 2-under 68 in the opening round before turning in the best round of the tournament on day two, carding a 4-under 66 highlighted by steady play across both nines. He closed the event with a 1-under 69 to comfortably hold the top spot on the leaderboard.
Cal Lutheran placed multiple golfers near the top of the standings, led by
Ryan Mattivi, who tied for third overall at +2. Mattivi posted rounds of 73, 69 and 70, highlighted by a 4-under back nine in the second round that helped propel him up the leaderboard. Both Evans and Mattivi finished ahead of No. 25-ranked individual Owen Prewitt of LeTourneau, who tied for eighth.
Ty Kuroda also turned in a strong tournament, finishing tied for eighth at +8 with rounds of 75, 71 and 72.
Rounding out the scoring lineup were
Luke Rimkunas, who finished tied for 23rd at +14, and
Jackson Stitt, who tied for 26th at +15.
Nick Huffman added a tie for 28th at +16.
Cal Lutheran returns to action next week when it hosts the Kingsmen Invitational on March 16-17 at Moorpark Country Club, which will also serve as the program's senior match.
