ALISO VIEJO, Calif. – Cal Lutheran University collected four SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors as
Tate Evans,
Caroline Morris,
Max McGrady, and
Izzy de Souza delivered standout performances for the Kingsmen and Regals across men's golf, women's golf, baseball, and women's water polo, the conference announced Monday.
Men's Golf
Evans, a freshman from Solana Beach, California, captured the individual title and led the Kingsmen to the team championship at the FST Crossing Creeks Invitational in Longview, Texas.
He fired rounds of 68, 66 and 69 to finish 7-under-par for the tournament, setting the tone with a 2-under 68 in the opening round before posting the best round of the event with a 4-under 66 on day two. Evans closed the tournament with a 1-under 69 to comfortably secure the top spot on the leaderboard.
His performance helped Cal Lutheran upset tournament host and No. 23-ranked LeTourneau, and he also finished ahead of No. 25-ranked individual Owen Prewitt of LeTourneau, who tied for eighth.
Women's Golf
Morris, a sophomore from Danville, California, tied for the individual title alongside teammate
Anna Poulin while leading the Regals to the team championship at the FST Crossing Creeks Invitational in Longview, Texas.
She finished the tournament at 11-over-par after rounds of 77 and 76, improving in the final round which was highlighted by a birdie on the par-3 15th that helped propel her into a share of the tournament lead.
She also finished ahead of host LeTourneau's No. 25-ranked individual Kinley Pessel, who tied for third.
Baseball – Pitcher
McGrady, a junior from Doylestown, Pennsylvania, turned in a dominant performance in the Kingsmen's series opener against Willamette.
The right-hander tossed seven innings while allowing just one run on five hits and striking out nine in Cal Lutheran's 2-1 victory. McGrady did not issue a walk, efficiently working through several key moments to keep the Bearcats off balance and preserve the Kingsmen's narrow lead.
His outing helped Cal Lutheran improve to 14-3 on the season while setting the tone in the tightly contested series opener.
Women's Water Polo – Defensive
De Souza, a graduate goalkeeper from Irvine, California, anchored the Regals defense in two SCIAC victories to keep Cal Lutheran undefeated in conference play.
She recorded a season-high 14 saves in a 9-6 win over Chapman before adding five saves and two steals in a 14-8 victory over Whittier.
Across the two matches, de Souza totaled 19 saves while leading the defensive effort to earn her second-straight weekly honor.
