Regals Finish Fifth at Pacific Grove

Anna Poulin
PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's golf traveled north to Pacific Grove to compete in the UC Santa Cruz Invite. The tournament took place on Saturday and Sunday at the par-71 Pacific Grove Golf Links. The Regals shot 65-over in 36 holes as a team to finish in 5th place, led by Anna Poulin's 13-over to tie for 13th individually.

In the opening round on Saturday, Poulin started off strong with five pars in the first five holes. She was able to birdie the par-4 hole 7 along with the first two holes of the back nine. She shot 1-over on the back nine to finish with a 75, backed by the aforementioned three birdies and 10 total pars.

Caroline Morris got off to a rocky start with three bogeys and two double-bogeys in the first five holes. She quickly settled in after that, riding back-to-back birdies on par-4 holes 14 and 15 to a 7-over opening round. She shot 1-under on the back nine.

Maya Dela Rama managed a birdie on the par-4 hole 9 and added nine pars to finish with a 79 in round one. Brooke Alderson joined her teammate in birdying hole 9, and added another on hole 14. Alderson finished with an 81. Ashley Zook continued the success on hole 9 with another Regal birdie, and she finished with an 83.

Cal Lutheran sat in 6th place after the opening round with a score of 29-over.

Morris again got off to a troubling start with four bogeys in the first five holes, but she followed that up with a birdie and six pars over the next seven holes. Following the tournament-wide trend, she birdied hole 9. Morris would finish with another 78, landing her at 14-over through 36 holes, good for T15th individually.

Alderson dropped in a birdie on hole 9 and parlayed that with eight pars to finish with a 79 in round two and at 18-over on the tournament.

Poulin couldn't find the consistency that she displayed in the opening round, but she sunk an eagle on the generous hole 9 and added a birdie on the par-4 hole 16 en route to an 80 on the day.

Zook played an up-and-down round, knocking in three birdies but suffering several bogeys and multi-bogeys to end with an 83 and at 24-over overall. She birdied the par-4 hole 4, hole 9, and the par-4 hole 13. Zook was the fourth Regal in round two to birdie-or-better on hole 9. That hole saw 42 birdies and five eagles over the weekend while only seeing 40 bogeys-or-worse.

Dela Rama shot an 87 to finish at 24-over through 36 holes.

Lily Stern traveled with the team and competed as an independent, knocking in two total birdies in her 36 holes. Both came on the par-4 hole 3.

Cal Lutheran finished ahead of two SCIAC foes in Chapman and Occidental. The Regals face a quick turnaround as they will compete in the SCIAC #2 on Saturday and Sunday, April 5 and 6, in Palmdale at Antelope Valley Country Club. It will be Cal Lutheran's final event before the conference championships. First tee is expected to be at 8am.
