MOORPARK, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's golf hosted the Regals Invitational at the par-72 Moorpark Country Club this week, placing in second with a team score of 68-over.
Ashley Zook led the Regals with a score of 12-over to claim third place, individually.
Seven teams gathered at one of Cal Lutheran's home courses to compete in the event, including SCIAC programs Chapman and Occidental.
Officially competing for the Kingsmen were
Brooke Alderson,
Kaylie Hesse,
Caroline Morris,
Anna Poulin, and Zook. The tournament kicked off on Monday morning at 8:00am with a shotgun start.
Hesse played a quality opening round despite bogeying her first hole. After 11 pars and six bogeys through 17 holes, she birdied the par 5 hole 5 to end at 5-over. Zook played a remarkably similar round to Hesse, as she had just one more bogey to finish at six-over. Her lone birdie came on the par 3 hole 9.
Morris was able to knock in three birdies for the Regals, two of them coming on par 5s. However, a quad-bogey on the par 4 hole 1, Morris' sixteenth hole, hurt her final scorecard. She would end at six-over. Alderson birdied her first hole, the par 5 hole 5, and only recorded one double-bogey. She finished at nine-over on the round.
Poulin had a tough day but was still able to sink a birdie on the par 5 hole 18. She notched a score of 13-over.
After round one, the Regals sat at 26-over as a team, putting them in second despite sitting 15 strokes behind the lead.
Tuesday's round would prove difficult for all golfers as the rain picked up in Moorpark, but the tournament would continue despite the harsh weather conditions.
Zook began the final round with a birdie on the par 5 hole 5 (the Regals' five golfers would birdie this hole 6 times over the two rounds). After a double-bogey on the ensuing hole, Zook would settle in to post a 78, putting her at 12-over on the tournament and third place, individually.
Morris and Hesse both found themselves at one-under through 2 holes after each birdied hole 5, but the rough conditions didn't allow for any more birdies from that Regals duo. Morris ended with an 83, finishing at 17-over through 36 holes, while Hesse notched an 86, finishing at 19-over over two days. Morris placed ninth overall.
Poulin played an up-and-down round two, dropping in three birdies, with two coming on par 3s. She finished with an 83 and at 24-over on the tournament. Alderson shot an 87 in the final round to give her a 36-hole score of 24-over.
Behind a tournament-best round two score, the Regals were able to manage a second-place tournament standing, finishing just five strokes behind Menlo.
Competing independently for Cal Lutheran were
Julia Booth,
Maya Dela Rama,
Victoria Ruiz,
Harlee Samp, and
Lily Stern.
Stern played an outstanding tournament, notching two birdies and many pars to finish at 16-over and seventh, individually. She sat at fourth individually after the opening round. Dela Rama holed out from 23 yards for an eagle on the par 5 hole 7, contributing to a score of 21-over on the tournament. Ruiz sank one birdie, finishing at 30-over. Samp recorded four birdies en route to a 38-over performance. Booth had two birdies, ending with a 36-hole score of 48-over.
Cal Lutheran women's golf will be back in action on March 29-30 for the UC Santa Cruz Invitational at Pacific Grove Golf Links in northern California.
