Poulin’s Historic Opening Round Propels Regals to Third-Place Finish in Season Opener

Anna Poulin
VENTURA, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's golf officially teed off for the first time in 2025 at the SCIAC #1 at the par-72 Olivas Links this weekend. Anna Poulin shot a 69 on day one, which stands as the second-lowest individual round in program history. The Regals would finish tied at third in the first conference tournament of the season, with Poulin also tying at third individually with a total score of three-over.

ROUND 1
Poulin actually started off poorly, with two early bogeys putting her at 2-over through seven holes. She would then catch fire, sinking birdies on five of the final ten holes to finish at 3-under, earning her a co-share of the individual tournament lead after Round 1. Her 69 is now the second-lowest individual round in Cal Lutheran history, only one stroke behind Erica Mitchell's round in September of 2019. The sophomore Poulin is picking up right where she left off after an impressive freshman season garnered her the honor of SCIAC Newcomer of the Year in 2024.

Freshman Caroline Morris would knock in three birdies en route to a five-over finish in her first taste of SCIAC competition. A triple-bogey on hole 10 hurt her overall score, but she was able to settle in and show some poise after that with two of her birdies coming in the next five holes.

Kaylie Hesse started off her season with a birdie on the first hole and added two more on the day, ending with a 78. Ashley Zook grew more comfortable as the round went on, knocking in a birdie on the par-4 hole 12, contributing to a one-over on the back nine. She would finish at seven-over.

Brooke Alderson essentially played two completely different rounds, collecting a birdie and eight pars in the front nine, placing her at one-under halfway through. She wasn't able to keep the magic going, finishing 13-over on the back nine.

Poulin's career round led the Regals to a team score of 303 on day one of the tournament, which is tenth-lowest team round in program history.

ROUND 2
A day later, Morris would continue to make a statement in her young career, leading the Regals with a 4-over round. She notched pars on each of the first four holes, pairing a solid start with three later birdies while avoiding anything worse than a bogey.

Poulin wasn't able to continue tearing up the course the way she did in Round 1, but she still had a solid showing with three birdies, finishing with a 78. Hesse didn't record anything worse than a bogey while dropping in two birdies for a 79.

Zook joined the party with two birdies, finishing with a 79 on the day. Alderson played consistently with 12 pars, but she couldn't sink a birdie as she joined Hesse and Zook at seven-over.

The Regals would finish with a 36-hole score of 615, tying for seventh-lowest in program history. This is the third time in four 36-hole rounds this school year that the Regals have invaded the top-ten list in that category. This past September, Maya Dela Rama joined Alderson, Morris, Poulin, and Zook to shoot the lowest 36-hole score (599) in program history at the CA State Intercollegiate.

Cal Lutheran's score of 39-over was good for third place in the SCIAC #1. They will next tee off in Kerrville, Texas at the Shreiner Shoot-Out at Comanche Trace. First tee is scheduled for 6am PT, 8am local time on March 3.
