SANDESTIN, Flor. – Cal Lutheran women's golf traveled to Florida this past week to play in the Golfweek Classic at the par-72 Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. The Regals played 18 holes per day in the three-day event that began on Sunday and ended this morning. 24 schools made the trip to San Destin, and Cal Lutheran finished in 10th.
Making the trip for the Regals were
Maya Dela Rama,
Caroline Morris,
Anna Poulin,
Kaylie Hesse, and
Brooke Alderson. Each of them teed off on the first hole to begin the Sunday and Monday rounds, and on Tuesday they each teed off on hole 10.
Dela Rama managed a pair of birdies in the opening round en route to a +4 scorecard. Hessee started well with two birdies across her first six holes and added another on hole 11, finishing at +5. Poulin shook off a tough start with a birdie on her final hole to shoot +7. Morris sank a birdie on hole 6 and ended at +10. Alderson collected a birdie on hole 3 and shot +13.
The Regals finished at +26 as a team in the opening round, sitting at 9th on the leaderboard. Dela Rama (T-18, +4) and Hesse (T-25, +5) both ended day one in the individual top 25.
Poulin dominated the course on Monday, kicking off her round with consecutive birdies before birdying hole 5 as well. She sat at -3 through 5 holes, then birdied 18 again to end at -2 with a 70, tying her for the third-lowest round in Regals' history. Poulin also holds the second-lowest round ever with a 69 this past February, and she extended her program record for most rounds at par or under (6).
The rest of the Cal Lutheran roster struggled on day two, as Dela Rama, Hesse, and Alderson shot +11. Alderson managed a birdie on hole 16. Morris shot +12 but had some bright spots, collecting four birdies in an unusual round.
Cal Lutheran shot +31 as a team, moving down to T-13th overall at +57. Poulin vaulted up to T-12th at +5 after 36 holes, individually.
Morris played her best golf on Tuesday, notching three birdies in the back-nine en route to a +1 round. Dela Rama had a solid day, birdying hole 4 and converting 13 pars for a score of +3. Hesse sank three birdies to finish at +5. Alderson collected a birdie on hole 1, ending at +5. Poulin managed a pair of birdies, but a tough start kept her at +13 for the round.
Day three was Cal Lutheran's best round by far, putting together a +14 scorecard as a team. This propelled them back up to 10th overall at +71. The individual finishes were: T-42nd, Dela Rama, +18; T-42nd, Poulin, +18; T-49th, Hesse, +21; 53rd, Morris, +23; T-62nd, Alderson, +29.
The 54-hole team score of 935 goes down as the 4th-lowest in program history.
This concludes the fall season for Cal Lutheran.
