KANSASVILLE, Wisconsin – Cal Lutheran women's golf took a four-day trip to Wisconsin and returned with a tournament victory. Benedictine University hosted the two-day Midwest Regional Classic this weekend at Brighton Dale Golf Links, with 33 teams competing for the lowest score. With a final team total of 39-over, the Regals finished seven strokes ahead of second place.
DAY ONE
Cal Lutheran women's golf played quality team golf on Friday morning as they put themselves in position to win the Midwest Regional Classic. The Regals sit in second place out of 33 teams after day one at Brighton Dale Golf Links, the home course of Benedictine University. Junior
Ashley Zook shot 2-over on the par-72 course, positioning her as an individual co-leader. Freshman
Anna Poulin and
Caroline Morris each finished at 4-over while placing tied for sixth individually.
Brooke Alderson and
Maya Dela Rama each shot 10-over to round out the card.
Zook never let any hole get out of hand with twelve pars on the day. She added birdies on holes six and eleven on her way to 37s on both the front and back nines. Both of her birdies came on par 4s.
Poulin also played smart golf, matching Zook's twelve pars. She birdied the par-3 hole three and rode that birdie to a 37 on the front nine followed by a 39 on the back.
Like Zook and Poulin, Morris didn't have any double bogeys or worse. She finished strong, as she birdied two of the final three holes on her way to a 37 on the back nine. She preceded that with a 39 on the front.
The Regals trail the leading team, conference foe Occidental, by only one stroke heading into the final round tomorrow. If they can recapture the magic from today's performance, Cal Lutheran could return home with a tournament win early in the year.
DAY TWO
Caroline Morris led the charge on Saturday, ending with a 75 on the par-72 course. She sat at 5-over with three holes to go before back-to-back birdies on holes 16 and 17. The strong finish left Morris tied for second individually on the weekend at 7-over.
Tying Morris at second place individually was
Ashley Zook. She entered today as a co-leader and shot 77, with a 38 on the front nine and a 39 on the back nine. Zook birdied the par-4 hole nine.
Anna Poulin shot 4-over on Saturday to give the Regals a third top-five individual finisher at 8-over on the weekend. She dropped in two birdies in her second round, one on the par-4 tenth hole and one on the par-3 fourteenth.
Brooke Alderson shot a 79 on Saturday, giving her a tournament score of 17-over.
Maya Dela Rama finished with an 83 in round two to score a 21-over on the weekend.
Cal Lutheran will continue its fall season later this month at the Redlands Invitational on September 30 and October 1.
