PASADENA, Calif. – The No. 2 California Lutheran women's water polo team shutdown the Caltech Beavers 17-1 Wednesday at Braun Pool.
With the win, the Regals are 6-0 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC). CLU is now 14-5 and is on a three-game winning streak. This is the third time this season that the Regals have held an opponent to one point. It's the second time they have scored 17 points in a game.
The barrage of scoring came from all different angles as 11 different Regals found the back of the net. Avery Karich and Claire Justman both tallied a hat trick for the Violet and Gold. Sam Wulfestieg and Remy Wilkison each put up two more. Victoria Rose Meek, Bella Vares, Nikki Roed, Megan Seeman, Jay Clerou, Taylor Martinez, Carissa Carlos and Jayci Burrell all added one. The offense moved the ball around very well as the Regals recorded 11 assists. Burrell led the team with four.
The defense was also on point as CLU had 12 steals. Christin Hirn and Justman both recorded two. Bailey Meyer was in the cage for the first half. She made eight saves and only allowed one goal. Miara Pipe and Gaby Renteria took over the net in the second half and shut out the Beavers. Renteria made five saves and Pipe added one more.
The Regals got on the board right away as Wulfestieg scored 15 seconds into the game. Seeman added one a few minutes later and then Wulfestieg put in her second. CLU scored six goals in the first quarter as Meek, Karich and Roed each added one more. The Regals moved also tallied three assists.
In the second quarter, Burrell got the scoring going as she put the ball in the back of the net. Justman then got in on the scoring fun as she added a goal. Martinez and Vares both added a goal and CLU was up 10-1 at the half. The Regals kept the scoring going in the second half and put in five goals in the third quarter and then two more in the fourth. The Regals defeated the Beavers easily 17-1.
Cal Lutheran continues the season at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a big SCIAC showdown. The Athenas host the Regals Saturday at 11 a.m.
