POMONA, Calif. - After finding themselves down 4-0 after the first half, the Cal Lutheran men's soccer team came out in full-force in the second half to chip away at the lead, however, came up just short in a 4-3 loss to Pomona-Pitzer in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) matchup on the road Wednesday.
Offensive Highlights: CLU finished the match with 21 shots total, 12 of them on target. Jaime Alvarado started the scoring for the Kingsmen when he found the back of the net in the 55th minute. Chris Ortiz added another for the Violet and Gold in the 76th minute, and was followed shortly after by Diego Ortega with a goal in the 82nd minute. Shots on goal also came from Cristian Yepez, Brandon Kearney, Jared Pischke, Gabe Fernando, Nico Sabbattella, and Casey Kurtenbach. Andres Mendoza recorded his second assist of the season in the match.
Defensive Highlights: Eduardo Garcia made his debut for CLU this afternoon, starting the second half in goal and recording four saves, while holding the Sagehens scoreless through the period.
The Opponent: Pomona-Pitzer came out strong in the first half with four goals, but were held scoreless in the second. The Sagehens took 12 shots total, nine of them on target. Aidan Ferrer struck early in the 4th minute to give the Sagehens the lead. Goals also came from Peter Rentzepis, Voja Maric, and Felipe Galvis.
Cal Lutheran (4-5, 3-4 SCIAC) will return to Rolland Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 3:30 p.m. to take on La Verne.
