REDLANDS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran men's soccer jumped out to a two-goal lead Wednesday night, but Redlands answered with four straight goals to hand the Kingsmen a 4-2 loss at Farquhar Field.
The Kingsmen (2-5-3, 0-4-1 SCIAC) struck first in the 23rd minute when
Maximo Schelotto found the back of the net off an assist from
Tika Kakimoto. Schelotto worked his way around a defender and cut the ball back into the box for the finish, giving Cal Lutheran a 1-0 advantage.
Cal Lutheran then doubled its lead in the 38th minute.
Dane Paulson finished a give-and-go with Schelotto, touching the ball past the oncoming Redlands goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
Redlands (6-1-3, 3-0-1 SCIAC) cut the deficit in half just before halftime, scoring in the 45th minute to send the match into the break with the Kingsmen leading 2-1.
The Bulldogs continued their comeback early in the second half, tying the match in the 52nd minute before taking the lead in the 55th. Redlands added a penalty-kick goal less than two minutes later to complete the four-goal run and take a 4-2 advantage.
Cal Lutheran continued to create opportunities down the stretch, earning eight corner kicks in the second half and putting three shots on target after halftime, but Redlands goalkeeper Jaden Nisperos made all three saves to keep the Kingsmen off the board.
The Kingsmen return home Saturday, October 3, for Senior Night against Caltech. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at William Roland Stadium.
