CLAREMONT, Calif. - The final first round Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game of the year for the Cal Lutheran women's water polo team was a lopsided one as the Regals fell 8-1 at the hands of Pomona-Pitzer on the road this morning.
PP def. CLU 8-1 - box score unavailable
The Regals struggled offensively today with the lone goal coming from Maddie Campbell on an assist from Amanda Jones in the third quarter. KC Brendel drew a team-leading three ejections and both Nicole Roed and Logan Young had a pair apiece. Defensively, Gina Merry finished with nine saves and two steals. Maggie Kurzeka led the way in the field with a trio of takeaways and Young and Kristi McGee each added two steals as well.
Notables: CLU is tied for sixth, with Redlands, after the first round of league play concluded today. The contest this morning was the lowest offensive output of the season and the first time the Violet and Gold were unable to net more than one goal in a game since an 11-1 loss to CSU Northridge in 2010. It was just the second time CLU scored a single goal in a SCIAC game with the other coming in the inaugural season (2004) against La Verne.
Up Next: Cal Lutheran (11-17, 3-5 SCIAC) heads to the SCIAC Championships from April 22-24 at the University of Redlands. CLU serves as the No. 7 seed and UR earned the sixth spot after winning the head-to-head meeting earlier this spring. The Regals will rematch Pomona-Pitzer in the first round at 3:30 p.m.
