THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - After falling behind in the second half to Caltech, the Cal Lutheran men's soccer team needed overtime to defeat the Beavers 3-2 in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) matchup on Wednesday night at Rolland Stadium. Brandon Kearney was the man with the Midas touch, providing a hat-trick for CLU, along with the golden goal in overtime.
The Kingsmen jumped out to an early lead behind a seventh minute goal from Kearney, but the offense sputtered for the remainder of the half and Caltech capitalized on the opportunity.

With the ball in their attacking third in front of the box, Alec Sands headed the ball to Adam Ball who fired a shot past the CLU keeper for the equalizer in the 16th minute.

The Violet and Gold dominated possession the entire first half and had a few more looks at goal coming via Henry Breheny headers, however, the game would remain tied entering the break.

At the beginning of the second half, Caltech worked its way down the field and Jack Banaszak lofted a ball into the box. Theodore Wilkening leaped up among a flurry of defenders and headed the ball back and into the goal for a 2-1 lead.

With the pressure mounting as the clock ticked away, Kearney came through once more for the Kingsmen. Nathan Davidson started the play at midfield and lobbed a deep ball to Kearney who drilled a shot to the upper right corner of the goal.
After a handful of chances for CLU at the end of regulation, the teams would head to overtime.

Just five minutes into extra time, Pedro Zaccarelli passed it into the box for Kearney who found the back of the net and sent the Kingsmen home with a win.

CLU outshot Caltech 22-8 and held a 10-1 edge in corner kicks. Kearney totaled a game-high four shots while Davidson, Breheny, Elmer Molina and Casey Kurtenbach tallied three. Kurtenbach also added his first career assist with a pass to Kearney in the first half.
Cal Lutheran (2-5-1, 2-3 SCIAC) will continue SCIAC action this Saturday, Sept. 26 on the road against Redlands at 7:00 p.m.
