LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Just 48 hours removed from its second consecutive double overtime contest, the Cal Lutheran men's soccer team was back in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action on the road tonight. At Occidental, facing a Tigers' team that was coming off its first loss of the year, the Kingsmen came up short, dropping a 3-0 decision.
Highlights: After being held without a shot in the first 45 minutes, CLU looked to Nick Baldi for half of the team's shots with two in the second stanza. Both Brandon Kearney and Jared Pischke took a shot apiece. Doing the goalkeeping for Cal Lutheran tonight was freshman Nico Melendez who recorded four saves. Tonight 21 Kingsmen aided in the attack, unlike the game on Monday when just 12 players took the field.
The Opponent: Occidental (8-1-3, 5-1-3 SCIAC) took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute on a goal from Morgan Bennett-Smith with an assist from Santiago Bedoya-Gallego to count for the ultimate game winner. The Tigers added a pair in the second half.
Notables: CLU has only been shut out twice this year and has scored 18 total goals this fall. Occidental swept the SCIAC season series in 2015.
Next Up: Cal Lutheran (2-9-2, 2-7-1) heads to Chapman on Monday, Oct. 12 for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff against the Panthers.
