PASADENA, Calif. - This afternoon for the final time of the year, the Cal Lutheran men's soccer team suited up. At Caltech in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) finale, the Kingsmen pushed their way to a 3-0 victory to conclude the season on a high note.
Offensive Highlights: Cal Lutheran outshot Caltech 12-5 in the first half and earned five corner kicks before adding 13 more attempts in the second half to total 25 with six overall corner kicks. In his final collegiate game, Logan Cone scored the first and ultimate winning goal of the day on an assist from Elmer Molina in the 12th minute. After the intermission, CLU doubled up its lead when Casey Kurtenbach found the back of the net on an assist from senior Nick Baldi 45 seconds into the stanza. With just under 10 minutes to play Cone notched an assist as well when Spencer Gottmer punched in the third and final goal of the game and season. Cone and Brandon Kearney finished with a share for the game hi in shots with four apiece.
Defensive Highlights: Earning the start in front of the CLU goal today was Sean Williams who played all 90 minutes, turning away all three shots that came his way. Henry Breheny, Charlie Villa-Lovos and Tal Zaiet all aided in the shutout as the starting defensive unit today.
The Opponent: The Beavers looked to Alec Sands for three of their nine shots.
Notables: Seven seniors donned the Violet and Gold today for the final time and the five active players (Baldi, Cone, Zaiet, Branden Vogl and Pedro Zaccarelli) all contributed on the field. Nineteen different Kingsmen stepped on the field against Caltech in the win.
Cal Lutheran concludes its season with an overall mark of 3-13-3 and a 3-11-2 SCIAC record after facing much adversity throughout the semester.
