ORANGE, Calif. - Back on the road for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match-up with league-leading Chapman, the Cal Lutheran men's soccer team earned a 2-1 upset victory over the Panthers tonight.
CLU came out firing, earning a corner kick just over a minute into the contest. The Kingsmen then took the first two shots of the game though neither got through. CU powered back and took the advantage in shots, seven to three, but the Kingsmen got the scoring started.
In the 37th minute Nathan Davidson put away the first goal of the game on a pass from Zack Larson, but less than a minute later at 37:39 Daniel Friedman and Gabe Recht-Appel joined forces to tie the teams up late in the opening period of play.
Possession continued to change hands until Larson struck again. At the 75:54 he finally found the back of the net on his fourth and final shot of the game.
CLU maintained the lead over the final 14 minutes, with goalie Jack Duncan, recording a pair of saves to secure the victory and get the Kingsmen back in the win column after a pair of losses and a double overtime draw in their last three outings.
With just nine total shots in the game, Cal Lutheran also looked to Nathan Davidson and Tyler Pascoe for a pair apiece.
Defending the cage, Duncan tallied five saves in 90 minutes. The trio of Brandon Kearney, Gabriel Fernando and Alex Wardle each played the entire game as well.
The Panthers peppered the Cal Lutheran goal with 18 shots and earned nine corner kicks while CLU fired off nine with four corners. The Kingsmen were not called offsides all night while CU was whistled for three.
Chapman (4-2, 4-1 SCIAC) was defeated in conference action for the first time on a night that Sam Rudich led the Panthers with four shots and four other players took two apiece.
Cal Lutheran (3-3-2, 2-2-1) remains on the road for a Wednesday, Sept. 24 contest at Redlands. The teams will take the field at 7:00 p.m.
