LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran softball team earned a split against Occidental College Saturday and remained in the top four of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) standings. In game one, the Regals won 7-2 before Occidental won its second conference game of the year as it took the night-cap 6-1.
In game one, Stephanie Martello singled in Christina Hunter in the top of the fourth inning to give CLU a 1-0 advantage. Following a Kelly Lockwood walk and Danika Green sacrifice bunt, Andrea Brackpool laced a base hit into the outfield and scored Martello. Later in the inning, Liz Mertel came up with a two-run single that scored Brackpool and Lockwood while giving CLU a 4-0 advantage.
Later in the game, Green launched a three-run homerun to put CLU 7-0.
In the circle, Katelyn Downing (6-6) earned the win after throwing 7.0 innings while allowing two runs on seven hits.
In game two, Occidental scored two runs in both the fifth and sixth inning. Despite a an RBI- double from Martello that scored Kayla Sakamoto, Occidental wrapped up its fifth win of the year on the arm of Ali Goldberg, who pitched 7.0 innings and allowed just five hits and struck out five.
Green was 2-for-2 in game two to lead the Regals.
Courtney Sooy (9-5) suffered the loss after surrendering three runs on 11 hits while striking out five.
Cal Lutheran (19-13, 13-9 SCIAC) will look to lock up a spot in the SCIAC Post Season Tournament when it takes Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday, April 19 for a doubleheader. Game one of the series will begin at 2:00 p.m. at Hutton Field.
