LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Backed by its second consecutive shut-out, Cal Lutheran got a game-winning goal on free-kick from Salvador Orozco in the 73rd minute and defeated Occidental 1-0 on the road Monday night. Orozco's goal snapped a streak of 200 consecutive scoreless minutes for CLU. Conversely, the Kingsmen defense has allowed just one goal in the last 480 minutes including holding opponents scoreless in the last 237.
Two days removed from a double-overtime scoreless tie with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, it was the CLU defense that again shined during the first half against the Tigers. The stingy Cal Lutheran defense fought off four shots and three corner-kicks and used a big save from keeper Jack Duncan to keep a clean sheet during the first 45 minutes.
Oxy controlled the possession for most of the initial parts of the second half, registering five shots and two corners to Cal Lutheran's zero. However, in the 73rd minute, following a Tiger foul, Orozco curved in a free-kick shot from 40 yards out for a highlight-reel goal and the go-ahead score.
CLU would maintain its strong defensive form the rest of the night, dispelling any final Tiger offensive chances and thus earned its fourth win and third shut-out of the season.
Matt Hubbard led Cal Lutheran with four shots while Kyle Fleming had two. In goal, Duncan notched two saves.
Also playing an integral part in the win for the Kingsmen were Gabriel Fernando, Thiago Gaglianone, Julian Hernandez and Alex Wardel.
Cal Lutheran (4-1-1, 2-0-1 SCIAC) has quick turn-around as it hosts Redlands on Wednesday, Sept. 18 in Rolland Stadium. Kick-off is slated for 7:00pm.
