THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - After a pair of tough Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) road games last week the Cal Lutheran water polo team returned to the Samuelson Aquatics Center where the Regals cruised to a 19-6 victory over Caltech this afternoon.
As the first event of the Second Annual Division III Week, the water polo team gave the fans an offensive clinic as they seemingly scored at will during an eight-goal first quarter. Caltech broke in on the scoring with 2:14 to play in the second quarter and netted a pair in the period, but the Violet and Gold pushed their lead to 12-2 at the intermission.
After halftime the Regals came back to tack on three more in the third to lead 15-3 going into the final frame. Cal Lutheran scored four with Caltech tallying three in the final eight minutes of action.
Every player suited up for CLU today contributed something positive to the victory, which got the Regals back in the win column and even in league play at 3-3.
While a dozen different Regals scored at least one time, Caltech got five of six goals from Hanna Dodd. CLU looked to freshman Julia Samarin for a hat-trick, with all three coming in the second quarter, while Kehau Ai, Morgan Cook, Jane Galluzzi, Sami Harvey, Madison Jaramillo and Bailey Likewise each scored a pair.
Twelve of the 19 goals had assists today with Ai, Kaylee Kastrup, Morgan McCardell and Illissa Mestas handing out a pair apiece. The two CLU drawn ejections came from Ai and Samarin.
Defensively, Gina Merry played the whole game in front of the cage, turning away 12 Beavers shots. Both Samarin and Jordan Card recorded two steals while Samarin added a field block. Skylar Vasquez also had a field block for the Regals today.
Cal Lutheran (9-14, 3-3 SCIAC) will play the final home game of 2013 on Saturday, April 13 against Redlands at 11:00 a.m. Prior to first sprint four Cal Lutheran seniors will be honored.
