DAVIS, Calif. - Cal Lutheran opened the UC Davis Challenge today with a pair of tough games against Division I opponents, beginning with an early match against the host squad. The Regals fell 16-3 to No. 14 UC Davis before dropping a close 16-10 decision to No. 20 CSU Bakersfield in the afternoon.
To start the weekend off, CLU faced the Aggies, scoring one goal in the first quarter and two in the third. Jordan Card was responsible for two of the goals while Kaylee Kastrup provided the third. Card also drew five ejections for the Regals.
Defensively, Kehau Ai came away with four steals and Kastrup recorded three CLU. Kylee Tomasetti guarded the goal for the first three periods, tallying eight blocks with a pair of steals before Gina Merry took over in the fourth quarter to record four blocks with a steal.
UC Davis got out to a 4-1 first period lead and built on that, leading 10-1 at the intermission. CLU battled to a 3-2 third quarter before the Aggies closed things out with a 3-0 final frame.
Game two saw the Regals offense come to life, converting 5-of-9 man-up opportunities into goals, in a battle with the Roadrunners from CSU Bakersfield.
Cal Lutheran trailed just 8-4 at halftime before netting three goals in each of the final two quarters of action.
Ai continued to contribute with a pair of goals and four steals as did Card with two more goals and three additional drawn ejections on the day. Morgan McCardell got in on the scoring with a hat-trick for the Regals while Adrienne Ingalla, Lauren Ray and Shannon Streeter eachscored one.
Ingalla would go on to add a pair of steals for CLU and Skylar Vasquez came up with two steals as well. Tomasetti and Merry again split time in front of the cage, guarding the goal for a half apiece, recording six and five saves, respectively.
Cal Lutheran (0-3) will round out the UC Davis Challenge tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 17 with two games. The Regals will play Division I No. 18 Pacific at 9:00 a.m. before concluding the tournament against Division II Sonoma State at noon.
