Bufkin, Hall, Lewis, West Earn CLU Athletics’ Highest Honors

At the culmination of the athletic year, Cal Lutheran names its annual Athletes of the Year and Scholar Athletes of the Year. Each award goes to one male and one female athlete, for a total of four awards.

The Athletes of the Year are voted on by CLU Athletics Staff after athletes are nominated by coaches and administrators for excellence in their respective sports. The recipients of this award for 2024-25 are Carmen Bufkin and Devon Lewis.

The Scholar Athletes of the Year are selected by the Faculty Athletic Representatives not only for their achievements in their respective sports, but also for their success in the classroom and within the greater community. The recipients of this award for 2024-25 are Lincoln Hall and Avery West.

Bufkin put together one of the best careers in Regals tennis history, and she still has an opportunity to build her résumé at the 2025 NCAA Championships this upcoming weekend. She has been named All-SCIAC First Team each of her four seasons at Cal Lutheran, making her the first Regal to be given that honor more than twice. She qualified for the 2023 NCAA Championships during her sophomore year, and she is the program leader in both career singles and doubles wins with 52 and 48, respectively. She sits at 15-2 in singles so far in 2025.

Lewis had a career year in 2025 for Kingsmen basketball, leading to recognition on the NABC All-American First Team (a first in program history), the D3Hoops.com All-American Team, the NABC All-District 10 Team (for the second time), and the All-SCIAC First Team (for the second time). He was named the NABC District 10 Player of the Year and the SCIAC Athlete of the Year. He ranks in the top-10 in program history in career points (1,471), threes (167), and steals (137) and single-season points (625) and threes (86). Lewis led the Kingsmen to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 2023-2025.

Hall, a two-sport athlete, was a 2025 All-American in both water polo and swimming, a rare feat in college athletics. In water polo, he finished top-10 in program history in career (135) and single-season (62) goals. In swimming, he qualified for the 2025 NCAA Championships and placed 4th in the nation in the 100y Breast. Before traveling to the national championships, he earned the title of SCIAC Champion in both the 100y and 200y Breast, making him a 4-time All-SCIAC honoree throughout his swimming career.

West, a reigning national champion with Regals soccer in 2023, followed up a successful year with an even-more impressive senior campaign. She was named a 2024 All-American and earned back-to-back SCIAC Defensive Athlete of the Year. She made All-Region and All-SCIAC for the third times in her career, and both were back-to-back first team recognitions. West led the Regals to another NCAA Tournament appearance on the heels of their national championship.
