Regals Water Polo SCIAC Tournament Preview

Megan Findlay
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The Regals have made the SCIAC tournament for the 17th time in a row, having competed in every conference tournament since it was introduced in 2007. Cal Lutheran enters as the #4 seed and will take on the #5 La Verne Leopards today at 4:00 p.m. The winner will travel to Claremont to face the #1 Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens.

The Regals
Head Coach Tim Settem leads the Purple & Gold as he wraps up his second year at the helm. The Regals finished the regular season 13-14, but 7-5 in SCIAC play, which was enough to earn the #4 seed and a home first-round playoff game. Cal Lutheran has a winning record of 3-2 at home against conference opponents, including a home win against La Verne. The Regals also have the SCIAC's second-leading goal scorer in Katie Knight and the league leader in assists, Hudson Geier

The Field
#5 La Verne Leopards
The Leopards enter the tournament with an 8-15 record overall and a 7-5 SCIAC record. Chapman comes into the tournament with the SCIAC leader in goals scored, Alyssa Fricker. She scored 125 goals this season and carried the Panthers to a 12-12 regular season record and 8-4 in conference. The Regals split the season series with Chapman, with both games featuring one-goal differences.

#2 CMS Athenas
The Athenas claimed the #2 seed in the tournament with an 18-9 regular season record and an 11-1 SCIAC record. CMS attacker Grace Clark is the focal point for the Athenas as she recorded 68 goals and 32 assists on the season. Cal Lutheran fell to CMS 10-6 in a close battle in which Chloe Gardhouse had two goals, an assist, and four steals.
