Box Score 2 THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Regals outlasted the Toronto Golden Jets and the Concordia Golden Eagles in two back-and-forth competitions. Both games went to sudden death which led to an exciting day of water polo.
Cal Lutheran 8, Toronto 7
Cal Lutheran's first game was an exhibition match against Toronto. The Regals led the way at halftime, 3-2, and the game was all knotted up at six by the completion of the fourth period.
Claire Daland was able to score a miraculous last-second goal to send the game into overtime. Goalie
Izzy de Souza kept the Regals in the game with multiple clutch saves.
During extra time,
Bethany Metcalfe fired a goal into the top of the net to give the Regals a 7-6 lead. The Jets then set the game into a second overtime with a last-second goal of their own. In sudden death,
Chloe Gardhouse slotted in a game-winner to give the Purple & Gold their first win of the season.
Katie Knight had a team-leading three goals and Gardhouse tallied one goal and three assists.
Cal Lutheran 11, Concordia 10
In the Regals' second game of the day, they took on the Concordia Golden Eagles in a non-conference showdown featuring a nail-biting finish.
Cal Lutheran again led the way at halftime 5-4, but found itself in a hole down 6-8 in the fourth period. The Regals scored three of the last four goals to tie the game at 9-9.
Natalie Favazzo scored the tying goal in the fourth with 13 seconds left.
The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in overtime, but again with 13 seconds left
Hudson Geier finished a goal near-post to send the game to the second sudden death of the day.
Reyna Clark sent the Regals home with a win by scoring a stylish, no-look goal.
"I thought to myself, I need to find a way to put the ball in the back of the net," said Clark. "I was underwater when I shot it, but it went in and that is all that matters."
Head Coach
Tim Settem was pleased with the growth and effort from his team. "This team is resilient. To get two sudden-death victories is pretty huge against two very tough teams. We have a never-die attitude and we continue to keep going," he said.
The Regals are back in action in the Tina Finali Tournament next week on Friday at home, February 21 against OUAZ at 9:00 am and UC Merced at 1:30 pm.
