Leyva, Workman Homer Verses Leopards

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LA VERNE, Calif. — The California Lutheran softball team got swept by the La Verne Leopards in doubleheader action, by scores of 7-1 and 8-5, Saturday afternoon at Campus West Stadium.

With the two losses the Regals are now 5-5 overall and 1-3 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play. La Verne improved to 9-3 and 5-1.

Olivia Serrano started game one for CLU. In the bottom of the first, the Leopards jumped all over Serrano and took an early 3-0 lead.

The Regals got one run back in the fourth. They had the bases loaded with no outs when Antonia Rapisardi hit a sacrifice fly to center field and got a RBI as Olivia Leyva came home. That was all the Regals could score that inning.

La Verne scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth and the fifth as the Leopards took a 7-1 lead. Pitching and defense did the rest for ULV as they won the first game 7-1.

The second game saw two homeruns, two from each team. La Verna homered in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.

With two runners on, Brittany Workman homered to left field, scoring Rapisardi and Leyva. The very next inning, Leyva hit a two-run shot and CLU had a 5-1 lead.

The Leopards got all those runs back and then some as they scored four times in the fourth inning and took a 6-5 lead. ULV scored twice more and CLU couldn't answer as the Leopards held on to win 8-5.

Cal Lutheran is back home Saturday, March 3, as the Regals welcome Redlands to Hutton Field. The teams will play a doubleheader with the first game at 12 p.m. and the second at 2.
