REDLANDS, Calif. - Twenty-four hours later than originally scheduled, the Cal Lutheran softball team wrapped up its Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) season on the road with 6-1 and 2-1 wins at Redlands today.
CLU def. UR 6-1
Cal Lutheran got out to an early lead on an Andrea Brackpool solo homerun that left the Field of Dreams to lead off the top of the second. A pair of runs in the top of the third came by way of a Redlands error and a Brackpool RBI double, scoring Hannah Brown. In the top of the fifth senior Blake Lewis poked a three-run homerun to right centerfield, scoring Jacy Watanabe and Brown to give the Regals a 6-1 advantage. CLU notched 10 hits as Brown finished 3-for-4 with two runs, Brackpool was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Courtney Sooy (13-10) went the distance to get the win. She struck out two and scattered six hits allowing just a single run.
CLU def. UR 2-1
CLU jumped out to another quick lead in game two on a B. Lewis two-RBI single in the first inning that scored Brown and Watanabe who reached on a single and fielder's choice, respectively. The lead held throughout, though UR got one back in the bottom of the sixth. It could have been more threatening, but Abbigael Howard and Mikaela Mayhew teamed up to throw out a would-be-base-stealer for the first out of the frame just before consecutive multi-base hits of a triple and a double. Nicole White-Madolora handed the ball over to Sooy for the final two outs, a pop up and a swinging strike out. Sooy got a 1-2-3 seventh to record her first career save while White-Madolora (4-8) earned the win after 5.1 innings of work in which she scattered nine hits and allowed just one run. The five CLU hits came from as many different players. B. Lewis drew the only walk of the game to go along with her two runs batted in.
Notables: Today was the final game in the careers of four active Regals including Brackpool, Brown, B. Lewis and Taylor Beacham. The Regals reached double figure SCIAC wins for the fourth straight season this spring.
Cal Lutheran concludes its 2016 campaign with a 17-22 overall record and an 11-17 SCIAC showing to tie for fifth in the standings.
