THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - In a tale of two games at Hutton Field on Saturday, the Cal Lutheran softball team shutout Redlands, 8-0 in a six-inning mercy-rule victory to start the afternoon, before the Bulldogs rallied for a 12-1 win in the nightcap.
The series split marks the fourth consecutive time this season the Regals have split their doubleheader matchup.
Courtney Sooy (8-6) led the Regals to victory with a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out two. The junior also helped out her cause at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance with an RBI.
CLU got on the board in the bottom of the third after Mikaela Mayhew and Hannah Brown led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After Scooter Rapisardi advanced the runners into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, Amanda Lewis lined a single to left to drive in the first run of the game. Blake Lewis drew a walk to keep the inning going and a groundball by Andrea Brackpool brought in another run to give the Violet and Gold a 2-0 lead.
The Regals broke the game wide open with a five-run fourth inning on RBI singles from Brown, Rapisardi, B. Lewis and Olivia Leyva while Brackpool hit a fly ball to centerfield for a sacrifice fly.
Sooy came up with an RBI single to pad the lead in the sixth inning to round out the scoring for CLU.
B. Lewis finished 3-for-3 at the plate while Sooy, Brown and A. Lewis each collected two hits apiece. Seven of the nine Regals starters recorded an RBI.
In the polar opposite second game of the day, Redlands jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the second inning and scored nine more in the final two innings to win 12-1.
Despite a heroic pitching effort from Sooy, who started the game and went six strong innings, the Regals could not muster enough offense and committed five errors in the field.
Bulldogs starter Lauren Henson (6-4) tossed a complete game, scattering nine hits while allowing just one earned run.
CLU was led by Brackpool and Brown who went 2-for-3 and 2-for-4, respectively, at the plate.
Cal Lutheran (11-12, 5-7 SCIAC) will head out on the road for a conference doubleheader against Whittier next Saturday, Apr. 9 beginning at 12:00 p.m.
