LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Two weeks after last stepping on the diamond in a competitive environment, the Cal Lutheran softball team shutout Occidental 3-0 in the first game of a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) road series this afternoon, falling 5-1 in game two.
CLU def. OXY 3-0
The day started with a complete game shutout from junior hurler Courtney Sooy who aided her own cause with an RBI single in the top of the second inning for the ultimate winning run. CLU tacked on a second run when Hannah Brown scored on a Tigers' fielding error and the final run of the game came from an Olivia Leyva solo homerun in the top of the seventh inning. Sooy (6-5) scattered six hits and struck out four in 7.0 innings in her first shutout of the spring.
OXY def. CLU 5-1
CLU started hot in the second game with a back-to-back singles from Brittany Reed and Antonia Rapisardi followed by an RBI single from Blake Lewis, but that was as much offense as the Regals would muster. Mikaela Mayhew singled in the fifth inning and CLU loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, which included an Amanda Lewis double. Nicole White-Madolora (3-5) did not record an out before Sooy took back over in the circle as Oxy scored three in the first frame, all at the expense of the starting pitcher.
Notables: Sooy threw 13.0 innings today. Leyva notched her second homerun of the season and third of her career. Emily Manwell served as the designated player in game one, marking her first appearance in that role this season.
Up Next: Cal Lutheran (9-10, 4-6 SCIAC) will take the field on Monday, March 21 for a non-conference doubleheader against Hamline (Minn.) at Hutton Field with first pitch of game one set for noon.
