WHITTIER, Calif. - After an exciting first day of Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament action on Friday, the Cal Lutheran softball team returned to Palmer Field on Saturday where they were eliminated with a 9-1 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Facing the challenge of winning three straight games to win the SCIAC championship and receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Regional, the Regals took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Olivia Leyva connected on a pitch for her first career homerun to give CLU the early advantage.
Unfortunately, that would be the only run of the day for the Violet and Gold as Athenas pitcher Andrea Jewett kept the Regals bats silent. CMS answered back to tie the game in the bottom of the first inning and took the lead with an RBI single off the bat of Carly Roleder in the third.
CMS exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach and Roleder continued her hot hitting with a three-run homerun in the frame.
Blake Lewis joined Leyva as the only other Regal to have a hit in the game.
Cal Lutheran finishes the year with a 20-21 record and will return 13 players while seniors Christina Hunter, Kaity Carter, Shonna Christianson, Liz Mertel and Ryanna Morua will graduate in May.
