LOS ANGELES, Calif. - For the first time since 2008, the Cal Lutheran women's water polo team returned from Occidental with a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) victory after doubling up the Tigers, 10-5, today at Taylor Pool.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first quarter and trailing 3-2 at the break, the Regals rallied for a six-goal third period to take a lead they would not relinquish en route to the win. Nearly everyone contributed positively today in what was a total team effort.
Amanda Jones led the way with a hat-trick and both Kaylee Kastrup and Sam Wulfestieg netted a pair. The remaining Regals goals came from Maddie Campbell, Jordan Card and Tatiana McCuaig. Kastrup dished out a pair of assists and Card, Jones, McCuaig, Maggie Kurzeka, Gina Merry and Lauren Shackelford handed out one apiece. CLU combined for six drawn ejections and Card had half of those with three.
Defensively, Cal Lutheran was just as tough as the unit stole the ball away 20 times. Kastrup and McCuaig each grabbed five and Young tallied three while supplying the only field block of the game. Merry notched 11 saves as the goalkeeper.
Cal Lutheran (7-17, 3-4 SCIAC) wraps up its regular season on Saturday, April 18 when the Regals host Pomona-Pitzer at 11:00 a.m. for a SCIAC showdown that will double as senior day.
