CLAREMONT, Calif. - After sweeping Pomona-Pitzer at home yesterday, the Cal Lutheran softball team traveled to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday where they dropped game one 5-1 before falling 8-0 in five innings in game two.
The Athenas got on the board first taking an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, but the Regals would answer back in the fourth inning.
Blake Lewis sparked a two-out rally with a double down the left field line and Amanda Lewis followed with a single to right field. B. Lewis would come around to score on the play after an error from the right fielder and CLU tied the game 1-1.
It would not be enough, however, as CMS would answer back quickly in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on a CLU miscue to take a 3-1 advantage. Carlene Roberts added a two-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth to extend the Athenas lead to 5-1.
Cal Lutheran looked to keep things alive in the seventh after Liz Mertel reached on an error by the third baseman and Hannah Brown reached first after being hit by a pitch. With a runner in scoring position, Makenna Pellerin came up to the plate and hit one through the right side, but runner's interference was called to end the rally and the game, giving the Athenas the 5-1 win.
A. Lewis led the team offensively; going 2-for-3 with an RBI, and B. Lewis provided the only other hit in the game.
The Regals bats remained quiet in game two, managing just three hits, coming from Olivia Leyva, Ryanna Morua and Brown.
Meanwhile, the Athenas bats were firing on all cylinders as they scored runs in every inning. Elaine Wang capped off the afternoon with an RBI single to center to end the game via mercy rule in the fifth inning.
The Regals (16-15, 12-9 SCIAC) will return to Hutton Field on Wednesday, Apr. 15 to face Chapman in a scheduled makeup game at 1:00 p.m.
