CLAREMONT, Calif. - For the second straight weekend the Cal Lutheran women's water polo team played in a multi-day tournament against many scholarship teams. At the 2015 Claremont Convergence, CLU played four games at the Axelrood Pool, going 1-3 with a win over Occidental on Friday afternoon.
The weekend started with a tough 13-5 loss to Division II Sonoma State, but the Regals bounced back for an exciting 11-10 win over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) foe Occidental in the second game of the day in a non-league meeting.
In the morning, Jordan Card provided a hat-trick with three drawn ejections and Amanda Jones handed out two of the four assists in the game. Gina Merry led the way with three steals while tallying eight saves as the goalie.
An exciting game against Occidental throughout came down to the final 15 seconds. The 11 Cal Lutheran goals, in an 11-10 win, came from seven different players with four Regals netting a pair apiece including Card, Jones, Maddie Campbell and Tatiana McCuaig. Additionally, Jones dished out three assists and again Card led the way with two drawn ejections. Defensively, Campbell, McCuaig and Kaylee Kastrup each grabbed two steals, Logan Young tallied two field blocks and Merry posted 10 saves. After time expired, Oxy earned a free shot, which went off the cross bar to clinch the win for the Regals.
Saturday morning started with a 13-3 loss to Division I UC San Diego in which Card, McCuaig andYoungprovided the three goals and Erin Cunefare was responsible for two assists. Campbell earned two drawn ejections. Cindy Delic paced the group with three steals and Merry recorded 10 more saves.
The weekend concluded with a 12-6 loss to Concordia-Irvine in which Delic and Campbell each scored twice and Card and Young rounded out the goals. Jones and McCuaig again handed out assists with two apiece. Kastrup drew a team-leading four ejections, more than the rest of the team combined. Seven different players finished with multi-steal games and the Regals combined for 18. Merry finished the weekend with 14 saves for an average better than 10 in the tournament.
Cal Lutheran (2-11) will be back at the Samuelson Aquatics Center for two games on Wednesday, March 11 against George Washington (D.C.) and Connecticut College at 2:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively.
