CLAREMONT, Calif. - Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competition for the Cal Lutheran women's water polo team continued today on the road at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps where the Regals dropped an 8-5 decision to the Athenas.
CMS doubled up CLU 4-2 in the first quarter and a scoreless second for the Regals put the visiting squad at a 7-2 deficit going into halftime. Out of the break the teams exchanged a goal apiece in the third and Cal Lutheran netted two in the final frame while holding the Athenas off the board, though the late surge was too little, too late, for a comeback.
Leading the offensive attack for the Violet and Gold was Jordan Card with a pair of goals and five drawn ejections. The remaining three goals came from Amanda Jones, Kaylee Kastrup and Sam Wulfestieg with Jones, Tatiana McCuaig and Lauren Shackelford each supplying an assist. The only other drawn ejection of the game was earned by Maddie Campbell.
Defensively, Gina Merry blocked 10 shots and added a steal. McCuaig and Logan Young grabbed five and four steals, respectively, and Kastrup finished with three while Jones and Shackelford each had a pair of takeaways. The lone field block of the game was notched by Young.
Cal Lutheran (5-14, 1-1 SCIAC) remains on the road over the weekend, traveling to La Verne on Saturday, March 28 for a meeting with the Leopards at 11:00 a.m.
