THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - On a rainy Saturday afternoon, the Cal Lutheran softball team dropped their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opener to Chapman 10-1 at Hutton Field.
The Panthers got on the board early with a run in the first inning and they extended their lead with a big third inning. Amber Perez hit a three-run homerun and Gabrielle Leveratto added an RBI double to give Chapman a 6-0 lead.
Looking to respond in the bottom half of the inning, Makenna Pellerin led off with a base hit up the middle. Christina Hunter followed with her second infield single of the game and Amanda Lewis sacrificed the runners into scoring position. With one out, Olivia Leyva hit a line drive single to right field to score Pellerin from third and give the Regals their only run of the game.
As the rain started to pour, Chapman kept their bats alive with a three-hit, four-run inning in the top of the fifth to take a 10-1 lead.
Hunter led the Regals at the plate going 2-for-3 and Taylor Beacham and Blake Lewis joined Pellerin and Leyva with the other hits for CLU.
Courtney Sooy (0-3) went the distance for the Regals in her third start of the season and tallied one strikeout.
Cal Lutheran (0-5, 0-1 SCIAC) will return to Hutton Field for a doubleheader tomorrow Feb. 8 against Redlands starting at 12:00 p.m.
