CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opener for the Cal Lutheran women's soccer team did not go the way the Regals had hoped it would as CLU fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps by a 4-1 margin at Pritzlaff Field tonight.
After the first 45 minutes the Violet and Gold trailed 2-0 and CMS would add to that tally early in the second half when Sydney Smith, who was credited with the game-winner, found the back of the net for the second time of the contest. She scored on a pass from Darrah Shields who provided a pair of assists on the night.
In the 80th minute the Cal Lutheran offense broke through when Sarah Wardle and Katelyn Kimball teamed up for the assist and goal, respectively.
Unfortunately, less than a minute later CMS added an insurance score from Ellen Berkley in unassisted fashion to push the gap to a trio with under 10 minutes to play.
The first goal came by way of a cross from Shields to Elizabeth Augustine. The second started with a pass by Samantha Kunz, which Smith finished off.
Overall, CMS outshot CLU 16-7 and earned nine total corker kicks, six coming in the second stanza. The Cal Lutheran shots came from seven different Regals. CLU goalie Coral Hasley played all 90 minutes and recorded five saves while her counterparts Molly Freed and Morgan McCoy combined for four.
Cal Lutheran (2-3-1, 0-1 SCIAC) will be on the road for one more contest to cap off a four-game stint away from Rolland Stadium. The Regals will travel to La Verne on Saturday, Sept. 20 for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff with the Leopards.
