SEGUIN, Texas – No. 14 Cal Lutheran women's soccer suffered a 1-0 setback to Texas Lutheran University Sunday morning at Gustafson Field, closing the preseason with a 3-1-1 record.
The Regals controlled much of the match offensively, outshooting the Bulldogs 24-10 and earning 10 corner kicks, but could not find the back of the net despite putting eight shots on frame.
Cal Lutheran held Texas Lutheran to just three shots in the opening half and generated eight of its own, but the match remained scoreless at the break.
The Regals continued to pressure after halftime, recording 16 shots and five corner kicks in the second half. Texas Lutheran, however, broke through in the 72nd minute when Madison Herrera scored off an assist from Makenzie Ivie to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
Cal Lutheran continued to push for an equalizer, but Texas Lutheran goalkeeper Alysa Marquez made six second-half saves to preserve the shutout.
Stephenie Hackett led Cal Lutheran with five shots, while
Jessica Sprouse and
Elena Baltazar each added four.
Reagan Keelan made four saves in goal.
With the preseason now complete, the Regals turn their attention to the SCIAC gauntlet, opening conference play Wednesday, September 16, at No. 6 Pomona-Pitzer at 4 p.m.
The matchup will be an early test for Cal Lutheran, as the Regals return to the site of last year's SCIAC Tournament championship game, where they defeated the Sagehens to claim the conference crown. The rematch promises to be another battle as the Regals begin the quest for their next SCIAC title.
