WHITTIER, Calif. - In a rematch of the regular season finale between the Cal Lutheran and La Verne water polo teams, the result was the same though the venue was different. On day two of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships hosted by Whittier at the Lillian Slade Aquatics Center, CLU earned a 12-9 victory.
The Regals jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first quarter and though LV scored four times in the second stanza Cal Lutheran responded with a trio to take a 6-4 lead into the locker rooms. The teams would exchange three goals in the third and CLU netted three more in the final frame while the Leos tacked on two additional goals over the final eight minute period.
Leading the offensive unit for the Violet and Gold was Jordan Card who had a five goal game, adding two assists, a drawn ejection and a steal. Also producing multi-goal performances today were Amanda Jones and Tatiana McCuaig with three apiece. The final scoring play came from Sara Simpson. To go along with her trio of goals, Jones dished out four assists and drew three ejections, both team-highs. Kaylee Kastrup shared the lead for drawn ejections as she tallied three as well.
Adrienne Ingalla did a little bit of everything, earning a pair of drawn ejections while handing out two assists and coming up with four steals, second on the team to Gina Merry who finished with six. The CLU goalie also recorded eight saves in the game. The only field block of the afternoon came by way of McCuaig.
Cal Lutheran (10-20, 6-4 SCIAC) wraps up the 2014 SCIAC Championships and season tomorrow, Sunday, April 27, in the fifth place game at11:30 a.m. against the winner of the Chapman/Occidental game tonight at 7:00 p.m.
