THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Cal Lutheran water polo faced a pair of difficult opponents during the second day of the 2014 Convergence Tournament hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. In the morning, CLU played Division II CSU Monterey Bay close, falling 9-6, before succumbing, 23-3, to one of the top Division I programs nationally in No. 6 UC Irvine.
Tied 3-3 at halftime against Monterey Bay, the Regals looked to Amanda Jones late in the third period to break a 5-5 tie and give the Violet and Gold a 6-5 advantage entering the final frame. Unfortunately, CSUMB stormed back with four unanswered goals to seize control and steal the game.
CLU was led by Jordan Card who scored a pair of goals, drew three ejections and nabbed two steals. Each finding the back of the net as well was KC Brendel, Adrienne Ingalla and Logan Young. Drawing ejections for the Regals against CSUMB were Ingalla, Hannah Andrews and Devin Foster. In addition to her goal, Jones handed out three assists while Young tallied the final assist of the game.
Defensively, Ingalla came away with a team-leading three steals, Young had two and Gina Merry tallied two with seven saves as the goalkeeper.
The afternoon contest pitted CLU against UC Irvine at Pomona-Pitzer's Haldeman Pool. The Regals fell behind early and generated three goals with two from Card and one from Sara Simpson. The duo combined for five of the eight CLU drawn ejections in the game and Card, Young and Tatiana McCuaig each came away with two steals. Ingalla recorded a field block in the loss and Merry finished with 10 saves.
Cal Lutheran (3-9) returns to the Samuelson Aquatics Center on Wednesday, Mar. 12 to face Concordia-Irvine at 1:00 p.m. and George Washington (D.C.) at 4:00 p.m. The SAC will feature a neutral site game between Concordia and GW at 10:00 a.m. as well.
