Merry Makes History for Regals

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Day one of the Convergence Tournament hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was one to remember as Cal Lutheran took down Division II CSU San Bernardino, 12-7, and Division I Virginia Military Institute (VMI), 15-8, as Gina Merry produced a new program record for saves in a single-game during the nightcap.

In seven of nine contests this spring, Merry has recorded 10 or more saves in a game, but today was an incredible performance as the sophomore starting goalkeeper turned away 17 VMI shots, after tallying 11 in the opening game of the tournament, to lead the Regals to a sweep. She added a trio of steals against CSUSB as well.

Defense shined overall, with 18 total steals and four field blocks. Adrienne Ingalla had another well-rounded performance that featured a pair of field blocks with KC Brendel and Sara Simpson recording one apiece as well. Ingalla nabbed three combined steals and Amanda Jones chipped in with a trio against VMI. Both Kaylee Kastrup and Tatiana McCuaig had a pair of steals against CSUSB.

Offensively, CLU jumped out to an early lead against San Bernardino by scoring seven first quarter goals and held an advantage throughout the VMI game before exploding for seven in the final frame of the day as well.

Jordan Card paced the pack by matching a career-best twice today after scoring six goals in each contest. Additionally, Ingalla had a pair of hat-tricks while adding four assists and Brendel, Jones and Sami Harvey netted two goals apiece on the day. Card drew a team-best four ejections overall and Jones earned three. McCuaig handed out five assists in the games and Hannah Andrews contributed two.

Cal Lutheran (3-7) begins the second day of the two-day, three-location, 21-team tournament at the Axelrood Pool on the campus of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps before finishing the day and weekend out at the Haldeman Pool across the street at Pomona-Pitzer. CLU first faces CSU Monterey Bay at 9:00 a.m. and concludes the tournament at 3:40 p.m. against UC Irvine.
