SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Day one of the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State University challenged the Cal Lutheran water polo team as the Regals fell to a pair of Division I opponents in Harvard (Mass.) and No. T-20 Wagner (N.Y.) by 10-3 and 13-3 margins, respectively.
Though the results were grim, the CLU players continue to improve and learn from the rigorous scheduled laden with top opponents.
Four different players found the back of the net today with Jordan Card leading the attack by supplying three, two in the second game against Wagner and one in the morning tilt. Gina Merry continues to be a stopper for the Violet and Gold in front of the cage, turning away 24 total shots.
In the first game of the tournament Card did a little bit of everything as she always does. To go along with her goal, she drew four ejections, recorded an assist and came away with four steals, sharing the team-lead with Merry in the latter category. Chipping in with goals were Amanda Jones and Adrienne Ingalla while KC Brendel handed out two assists and Kaylee Kastrup earned two drawn ejections. Merry finished with 13 saves.
The second game featured 11 saves from the sophomore goalkeeper with Ingallaand Sara Simpson grabbing two steals apiece. Offensively, Kastrup led the team with three drawn ejections followed by Card with a pair. Logan Young rounded out the scoring as both Jones and Tatiana McCuaig supplied assists.
Cal Lutheran (4-12) returns to the pool tomorrow, Sunday, March 16 to face off with No. 8 Princeton (N.J.) at 11:45 a.m. before rounding out the weekend against Bucknell (Pa.) at 3:00 p.m.
