WHITTIER, Calif. - Cal Lutheran capped off its 2012 season with a 10-6 win over tournament host Whittier in the fifth place game at the SCIAC Championships on Sunday. Mieke Howell was one of three Regal seniors to score leading the way with four goals.

Box Score: CLU 10, WC 6 - F

Cal Lutheran scored four first quarter goals and held a 4-2 lead over Whittier at the half. Howell scored the game's opening two goals by the 3:53 mark of the first quarter, and the Regals never trailed against the host Poets.

After 13 different plays contributed 18 goals in Saturday's victory over Caltech, Sunday's scoring was concentrated among four Regals. Howell led the way with four scores, followed by Christina Messer with three, Kehau Ai with two, and Kelsey Bergemann one.

Ai and Bergemann combined for nine goals in the tournament and both scored in each of Cal Lutheran's three games this weekend. Howell finished with six goals of her own to lead the offense.

CLU goalkeeper Jessika Bell made eight saves and held Whittier to just one goal in each of the first three quarters. She is the second CLU goalkeeper to earn a complete game victory over the Poets this season after Kylee Tomasetti made 10 saves in an 11-5 victory in the home finale on April 18.

Cal Lutheran (18-11, 6-4 SCIAC) finished fifth at the SCIAC Tournament and tied for fourth place in the final conference standings with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Regals finished with a winning record both overall and in conference play for the fifth time over the past six seasons.

Pomona-Pitzer defeated Redlands 12-11 in sudden death overtime in the championship title game. The Sagehens finished the season undefeated in conference play earning their second title over the past three years.
