WHITTIER Calif. - In the final game of the first day of the three-day 2012 SCIAC Women's Water Polo Championships hosted by Whittier, the Cal Lutheran squad dropped a 10-4 decision to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Box Score: CMS 10, CLU 4 - F
CLU never found a groove and when CMS took a 2-1 first quarter advantage they would never look back. The Regals' deficit at the intermission was 5-1 and quickly grew to 9-2 after three periods.
Cal Lutheran would score a pair in the final frame, but it was too little too late as the Regals saw their chance at a SCIAC title slip away. The highest they can finish at the tournament would be fifth, with a pair of wins on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
The scoring was spread out as Kehau Ai, Kelsey Bergemann, Sarah Mock and Illissa Mestas each found the back of the net. Christina Messer drew four ejections for the Regals.
Kylie Tomasetti played the entire contest in front of the cage. She blocked six shots and came up with a team high five steals. Morgan McCardell grabbed three steals of her own.
Cal Lutheran (16-11, 4-4) will play Caltech tomorrow at 11:45 a.m. as the second game of the afternoon at the Lillian Slade Aquatics Center.
