CLAREMONT, Calif. – Cal Lutheran men's tennis faced a tough test on Friday afternoon, falling 7-0 to top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the road.
The Kingsmen (3-7, 0-2 SCIAC) were unable to gain momentum early, as CMS swept all three doubles matches to secure the opening point. The Stags continued their strong play into singles, earning straight-set victories on five courts to seal the team win.
At No. 1 singles,
Ethan Sherwood took on No. 19-ranked Warren Pham, battling against one of the nation's top players. CMS also featured multiple nationally ranked players throughout both its singles and doubles lineups, showcasing its depth as the top team in the country.
Maxence Faniel delivered Cal Lutheran's most competitive performance of the day at No. 4 singles. After dropping the opening set, Faniel responded with a strong second-set win to force a deciding tiebreak, where he ultimately fell short in a 4-6, 6-2, 3-10 battle.
The Kingsmen will look to bounce back quickly, returning home to host No. 29 Caltech tomorrow, April 4 at 3:30 p.m. at the Poulson Tennis Center.
