ROCKLIN, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran men's tennis team once again found itself in a tightly contested matchup on Sunday afternoon, battling throughout the lineup before falling 4-3 to NCAA Division II opponent Jessup University.
For the second consecutive match, the Kingsmen pushed their opponent to the brink with multiple close contests, but the Warriors ultimately secured the win after claiming the doubles point and splitting singles play.
Jessup opened the afternoon by taking the doubles with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Cal Lutheran picked up a doubles win at No. 3, where
Toki Adachi and
Maciej Gawronski combined for a 6-3 victory.
The Kingsmen responded well in singles, quickly collecting points in the middle of the lineup.
Carlo Drewelow earned a decisive 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles to put Cal Lutheran on the board, and
Maxence Faniel followed with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 4.
Adachi then gave the Kingsmen their third point of the afternoon with a strong comeback at No. 3 singles, rebounding from a first-set loss to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-0.
Jessup, however, managed to claim the remaining courts to seal the team victory.
Cal Lutheran will return to action on Tuesday, March 24, when the Kingsmen host Whitworth University at 3 p.m. at the Poulson Tennis Center.
