LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran men's tennis team took part in the USTA Level 5 Open Pacific Coast Doubles Championship this weekend, sending two pairs to compete at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
The event, which featured a large draw and a mix of collegiate and open competitors, served as a late addition to the Kingsmen's schedule and an opportunity to gain extra match experience ahead of their return to dual play.
Ethan Sherwood and
Maxence Faniel received a bye into the Round of 64 before opening tournament play on Friday afternoon. The duo faced Skylar Phillips and Matteo Huarte, falling 6-3, 6-2 in their first match. Dropping into the consolation bracket, the dou battled Alejandro Daniel Garcia and Nicholas Carneiro but came up short in an 8-4 pro set.
On the other side of the draw,
Raphael Simon and
Carlo Drewelow opened play early Friday morning in the Round of 128. The pair pushed their opponents in a tightly contested first set, narrowly dropping it in a 7-6 (7-5) tiebreak before falling 6-2 in the second. Moving into the consolation bracket, Simon and Drewelow advanced via two byes into the consolation Round of 32, where they ultimately fell 8-4 to Ethan Solop and Cameron Kruep.
The tournament utilized shortened scoring formats during early rounds due to draw size, with no-ad scoring and match tiebreaks in lieu of full third sets.
Cal Lutheran will return to team competition on Saturday, March 14, when it travels to face UC Santa Cruz.
