CARMEL, Calif. – Cal Lutheran men's golf traveled up to northern California to compete in the RCA Electric Invitational hosted by Menlo at the par-71 Quail Lodge Golf Course in Carmel. In the two-day, three round tournament, the Kingsmen finished in second as a team behind a top-10 finish from
Ty Kuroda.
Teeing off for Cal Lutheran were Kuroda,
Nick Huffman,
Ryan Mattivi,
Jackson Stitt, and
Tsukasa Katsuki.
Kaden Devenport joined them as an individual. The first day of action saw the golfers begin with a shotgun start at 9:00am Monday morning.
Huffman (H10) had an outstanding opening round with three birdies and 14 pars en route to a score of -2. Mattivi (H9) had an up-and-down round that included four birdies and 10 pars, ending at +1. Stitt (H11) managed a birdie on the par-5 hole 9, marking a +4 on his scorecard. Kuroda (H8) sunk a birdie on the par-4 hole 18 and finished at +5. Katsuki (H10) knocked in a pair of birdies on holes 4 and 7, recording an opening-round +6. Devenport (H18) played well, leading the Kingsmen with five total birdies as he shot +1.
As a team, the Kingsmen ended the opening round in a three-way tie for 3rd place at +8. Huffman was T-5th at -2.
Round 2 was another shotgun start later in the day at 2:00pm.
Kuroda (H8) showed out with four birdies and 11 pars on his final 15 holes to record the lowest round of any member of the Kingsmen this weekend at -3. Stitt (H11) sank three birdies en route to a +1 round. Katsuki (H10) overcame a rocky start to record three birdies on his final three holes to shoot +3. Huffman (H10) knocked in two birdies on holes 15 and 9, ending at +6. Devenport (H18) added three birdies in a +9 round.
The Kingsmen shot +6 as a team in Round 2, the second-best score among all teams. They sat one stroke behind the leader entering the final round. Kuroda ended day one in the top-10 at +2 through 36 holes.
The final round teed off as another shotgun start at 9:00am the following morning.
Kuroda (H8) collected a birdie on the par-4 hole 11 before sinking an eagle on the 502-yard, par-5 hole 14. He added another birdie later in the round to finish at +2. Huffman (H9) started off well with an immediate birdie on hole 9 and another on hole 11, en route to a +3 round. Mattivi (H10) and Katsuki (H11) closely mirrored each other, as both managed a pair of birdies on holes 14 and 1 and ended at +4. Stitt (H10) sunk a birdie on hole 14, finishing with a score of +6. Devenport (H18) shot the best final round of all the Kingsmen, knocking in four birdies, including Cal Lutheran's fifth birdie-or-better on hole 14, to finish under par at -1.
The Kingsmen finished the round at +13, but it wasn't enough to grab first, as they finished in 2nd place at +27 as a team through three rounds. Kuroda finished 7th at +4.
Cal Lutheran will next compete at the Golfweek Classic in Destin, Florida from October 12-14.
