THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran men's tennis hosted undefeated, #1-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Tuesday evening, dropping the match 7-0. The Kingsmen celebrated their three seniors after the match–
Andy Ai,
Ethan Sherwood, and
Loup Sudre.
The Stags entered the day ranked #1 in the nation by ITA and undefeated in 17 matches, with four players ranked in the top-16 regional singles and two duos ranked in the top-5 regional doubles.
The duos of Sherwood/Sudre,
Raphael Simon/
Maciej Gawronski, and
Frederick Otto/Ai kicked off the match for the Kingsmen. Simon/Gawronski dropped their set 6-1, and Otto/Ai were defeated 6-4. The Stags took the first team point of the match.
In the #1 spot, Sherwood/Sudre were locked in a battle. They almost pulled it off, but lost 7-5 in a nail-biter.
Sherwood was the only Cal Lutheran player to bring his singles match to a third set. Otto lost 6-0, 6-1. Simon was defeated 6-1, 6-1. Sudre dropped his match 6-2, 6-2.
Carlo Drewelow was bested 6-2, 6-2 in the #6 spot in his return from injury. Ai lost 6-3, 6-4.
Sherwood was facing off against one of the best players in the country, and he lost the first set 6-3. He retaliated in the next set, managing a 6-3 victory. With the match already clinched for CMS, Sherwood went to a 10-point third-set tiebreak. He fell 10-3, resulting in a Stags sweep. Despite the result, Sherwood played impressive tennis against a talented opponent.
The Kingsmen drop to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in the SCIAC. They will take the court next on the road at #17 Redlands on Saturday, April 12 at 10am.
