THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran men's tennis hosted Chapman on Saturday morning in its return to conference play. The Panthers proved too much for the Kingsmen to handle, as Cal Lutheran lost 6-1.
Chapman entered Saturday ranked #27 in the nation according to ITA, so the Kingsmen were facing a stiff test on their home court.
Beginning the day in the doubles matches were the duos of
Ethan Sherwood/
Loup Sudre,
Frederick Otto/
Raphael Simon, and
Andy Ai/
Maciej Gawronski. In the #1 spot, Sherwood/Sudre fell 6-4. Otto/Simon lost 6-2 in the #2 spot. Ai/Gawronski were defeated 6-4 in the #3 spot. The Kingsmen would enter singles down 1-0 after a tough round of doubles.
Simon was the only Kingsmen to record an individual victory on the day. He lost the first set 6-4 and was leading 4-2 in the second set when his opponent planted his foot awkwardly and was forced to retire. This marked Simon's third win in his last four matches as he rose to .500 in singles on the year.
Otto lost in the #5 spot by a score of 6-1, 6-0. In the #4 spot, Ai was defeated 6-3, 6-3.
Jake Anderson suffered his first singles loss of 2025 in the #6 spot, 6-0, 6-3.
Sherwood battled in the #1 spot but ultimately lost 7-5, 6-3. Sudre was able to capture a set and pushed his match to a 10-point third-set tiebreak. He ended up falling 6-2, 4-6, 10-6.
The Kingsmen drop to 4-7 overall and 0-2 in SCIAC play this season. They continue their season on the road on Friday, April 4 at Occidental at 4pm.
