Cal Lutheran is in! They are one of three SCIAC schools to get a spot in the tournament, joining auto-bid CMS and fellow at-large squad Redlands. The Kingsmen will play March basketball, traveling to Houston, Texas to face Hardin-Simmons in the first round of the DIII NCAA Tournament.
Cal Lutheran
Cal Lu (21-4, 14-2) will travel to Houston to take on Hardin-Simmons. The Kingsmen, who lost their conference championship by just a point, snagged an at-large bid in the tournament. The Kingsmen strung together two separate eight-game winning streaks and only lost two games at home. The Kingsmen, behind conference player of the year
Devon Lewis, ranked first in three-pointers made, three-point percentage, and free-throw percentage and second in margin-of-victory.
Hardin-Simmons
Hardin-Simmons (16-9, 8-0) will host Cal Lutheran in Houston, earning an auto-bid to the tournament after capturing the American Southwest Conference crown over University of Mary Hardin-Baylor 73-62. It was an improbable stretch by the Cowboys, who, after losing six straight in December to drop to 4-8 overall, would win 12 of their last 13 to finish 16-9 overall and undefeated in conference play, enough to get them into the tournament. Hardin-Simmons would show out in the tournament, winning both games by double-digits. The Cowboys will lean on star sophomore Chris Bryant, who ranked among the conference's top eight in both scoring (15.3) and rebounding (7.1), while leading in field goal percentage (.585) and blocks per game (2.2).
St. Thomas (TX)
St. Thomas (23-2, 15-1) will host Lewis & Clark, earning an auto-bid to the tournament after taking the conference title in overtime. The Celts went 15-1 across their final two months, with the lone loss by just two points. They, like Cal Lutheran, were sent to the tournament final on a buzzer beater, before winning an overtime thriller to take the SCAC crown. St. Thomas has dominated at home all season, going a perfect 14-0 and securing homecourt through at least the first weekend. The Celts are led by guard Angel Johnson, who recorded a season statline of 14/4/4 on 50% field goal shooting and 40% from three, and forward Andrew Adebo, who registered 13/7/2 on 58% shooting from the field.
Lewis & Clark
Lewis and Clark (13-12, 9-7) will travel to Houston to take on St. Thomas, also earning an auto-bid after making an improbable title run. Entering the tournament as the 4-seed, Lewis and Clark would upset top-seeded Whitworth and 3-seed Whitman in the final to secure a spot in the tournament. The Pioneers allowed a conference-best 69 points per game, while three contributed over 10 points per game (Mikey Medlock Jr., Sam Henderson, Isaac Ticeson).
