WHITTIER, Calif. — It came down to the final point as Cal Lutheran men's tennis defeated the Whittier Poets 5-4 on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Kingsmen improved to 1-1 in conference and 6-7 overall.
The Kingsmen held a 2-1 advantage after singles play. Ethan Sherwood and Luop Sudre won 8-2 in the No. 1 and Andy Ai and Raphael Simon won 8-6 at the No. 2. Jake Anderson and Carlo Drewelow lost 5-8 at the No. 3.
The Kingsmen claimed three singles matches and took the dual. Sherwood won 7-6(7-4), 6-4 at the No. 1, Anderson won 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 5 and Ai earned a point at the No. 4 as a Poet retired due to injury.
In the remaining singles matches, Sudre fell 2-6, 6-7(6-8) at the No. 2. Simon was defeated 3-6, 4-6 at the No. 3 and Drewelow fell 6-3, 2-6, 2-6 at the No. 6.
The Kingsmen are back in action on Saturday. They are at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday at 6 pm.
